What Touch VPN is and why you might want to use it with Edge
Touch VPN is a browser-friendly option that lets you route your browser traffic through remote servers to mask your IP address, circumvent geo-restrictions, and add a layer of privacy to your browsing session. When you run it as an Edge extension, it’s designed to be lightweight and convenient for quick uses—perfect if you don’t want a full stand-alone VPN app hogging system resources.
Key points to know:
- Browser extensions vs. full VPN clients: Edge extensions route browser traffic, but they don’t always guarantee system-wide protection. If you want your entire device protected, you’ll want a full VPN client.
- Free vs. paid features: Free versions of Touch VPN may come with bandwidth limits, slower speeds, or ads. Paid tiers often unlock higher speeds and more server choices.
- Logging and privacy: Always review the privacy policy. Free VPNs sometimes rely on data income, so check what data is collected and how it’s used.
How to install Touch VPN in Microsoft Edge
1 Open Microsoft Edge and go to the Edge Add-ons store.
2 Search for “Touch VPN” in the search bar.
3 Click the Touch VPN extension in the results, then select "Add to Edge." Confirm any prompts.
4 The extension will appear in your toolbar. Pin it for easy access.
5 Sign in or create a Touch VPN account if required. Some extensions offer guest mode. others need an account.
6 Grant the necessary permissions the extension requests. These usually include access to tab data or the ability to read and change data on websites.
7 Pick a server location from the server list. Common choices include the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and various European countries.
8 Turn the VPN on. You’ll typically see a status indicator connected/disconnected and possibly a new IP address or country label in the extension UI.
9 Test your connection by visiting a site like ipinfo.io or whatismyipaddress.com to verify your IP has changed.
Pro tips:
- If Edge’s Privacy or Security settings block the extension, you may need to enable extensions from all sites or disable certain site restrictions temporarily.
- Some corporate or school networks block VPN traffic. If you’re in a controlled network, you may need to request permission or switch to a personal network.
Step-by-step usage guide for daily browsing
- Step 1: Launch Edge and click the Touch VPN icon in the toolbar.
- Step 2: Sign in if required. otherwise proceed in guest mode.
- Step 3: Choose a server location. If you’re streaming or accessing a regional service, pick a country where that service is available.
- Step 4: Toggle the connection to “On.” The extension will show a connected status and usually a new IP location.
- Step 5: Open a new tab and browse normally. For sensitive tasks, consider also using Edge’s InPrivate mode or clearing cookies after your session.
- Step 6: If a site blocks VPN traffic, try a different server. Some websites purposefully block known VPN IPs.
- Step 7: When you’re done, switch the VPN off to return to your regular IP, or keep it on if you want ongoing privacy for that session.
- Step 8: When you’re done with your Edge session, sign out from the extension if you’re on a shared device.
What to expect in terms of speed and reliability:
- Speed varies by server distance and load. The further away the server, the more latency you may see.
- Free versions often cap speeds. paid tiers usually offer higher bandwidth and faster connections.
- Edge extensions are convenient, but if you’re doing bandwidth-heavy activities 4K video, large file downloads, online gaming, a dedicated VPN client or a higher-tier plan might be worth it.
Privacy, security, and performance considerations
- Encryption and protocols: Touch VPN typically uses standard VPN encryption to protect data in transit. Review the exact encryption protocol used in the extension’s help or settings to understand your protection level.
- Kill switch: Some VPN extensions include a kill switch, which blocks traffic if the VPN disconnects. If you need robust protection, look for a built-in kill switch or consider a provider that offers a system-wide kill switch.
- WebRTC leaks: Browser-based VPNs can sometimes be affected by WebRTC leaks, which may reveal your real IP. Enable WebRTC privacy settings in Edge or use a full VPN with a robust kill switch to minimize leaks.
- Data logging: Free extensions can log metadata like browsing history or connection timestamps. If privacy is crucial, review the privacy policy and consider a paid plan or a reputable alternative with a strict no-logs policy.
- Browser compatibility: Edge extensions are designed to work well with Edge, but compatibility can vary with beta features or major Edge updates. Keep the extension updated to minimize issues.
- System-wide protection: If your goal is to protect everything on your device, not just Edge traffic, consider pairing Edge VPN usage with a dedicated desktop or mobile VPN app that covers all apps and services.
Performance optimization tips
- Choose nearby servers first: If you’re near Europe, starting with a nearby Western European server can reduce latency.
- Test multiple servers: Switch servers if you encounter buffering, lag, or login issues with streaming services.
- Use streaming-optimized servers when available: Some VPNs designate servers for streaming to bypass ISP throttling more reliably.
- Close unnecessary tabs and apps: VPNs can be affected by other bandwidth-heavy activities. Free VPNs tend to slow down more under load.
- Schedule your VPN use: If you know you’ll need privacy during specific activities, turn on the VPN right before you start, rather than leaving it on all day.
Edge-specific tips and troubleshooting
- Edge profile management: If you use multiple profiles work, personal, keep the Touch VPN extension pinned only on the profile you want to protect. Extensions don’t automatically sync across profiles.
- Clearing cache and cookies: If you notice login issues on certain sites when connected via Touch VPN, clearing cookies related to those sites can help.
- Extension permissions: If you see frequent prompts about permissions, review them and only grant what’s necessary. You can revoke permissions later from the Edge extensions settings.
- Browser updates: Edge updates can sometimes affect extension performance. After an Edge update, recheck that Touch VPN is enabled and working as expected.
Common issues and quick fixes
- VPN won’t connect: Try selecting a different server, reload the extension, or restart Edge. Ensure you’re not on a restricted network.
- Slow speed: Switch to a closer server, check for other bandwidth-heavy tasks, or consider upgrading to a paid plan if you’re using a free tier.
- IP not changing: Visit ipinfo.io to confirm your IP. if it shows your real IP, reattempt connection or try a different server.
- Extensions not loading: Disable other extensions that may conflict, then re-enable Touch VPN. If needed, reinstall the extension.
- Blocked content on streaming services: Some streaming sites block VPNs. switch to a server specifically optimized for streaming, if available, or turn off the VPN for those sites.
Edge privacy settings you should know
- Edge privacy controls: Navigate to Edge settings > Privacy, search, and services. Consider setting tracking prevention to balanced or strict, but be aware it can affect site functionality.
- Permissions management: Regularly review extension permissions in Edge settings and revoke anything that seems excessive.
- InPrivate browsing: Use Edge’s InPrivate mode for sensitive sessions when you want to minimize tracking further, especially on shared devices.
- DNS settings: Some users prefer enabling DNS over HTTPS DoH for added privacy. Check Edge settings to enable DoH where available.
- Integrated security features: Edge’s built-in security features like SmartScreen work in tandem with extensions. Ensure these features are enabled for layered protection.
When to consider alternatives or upgrades
- If you frequently need device-wide protection: A dedicated VPN client not just a browser extension provides more consistent protection across all apps and services.
- If you need better privacy guarantees: Compare providers with strong no-logs policies, independent audits, and transparent privacy practices.
- If you want more server variety and reliability: A paid VPN service with a broad server network and high-capacity infrastructure tends to offer steadier performance.
- If streaming is your main goal: Look for VPNs that explicitly advertise streaming compatibility and provide servers optimized for platforms like Netflix, Hulu, orDisney+.
NordVPN is often recommended for users who want robust, cross-device protection with consistent speeds and strong privacy practices. Comparing Touch VPN with Edge to other VPN options
- Touch VPN Edge extension: Great for quick privacy on a single browser, fast to set up, but may have limits on free tiers and less control over privacy depth.
- Full VPN apps e.g., NordVPN, ExpressVPN: Offer system-wide protection, stronger privacy features, dedicated kill switches, and more consistent performance across all apps.
- Browser-specific VPNs vs. network-level VPNs: Browser-based solutions protect just the browser, while network-level VPNs protect all network traffic from the device. Choose based on your needs.
Practical use cases
- Bypassing geo-restrictions for lightweight browsing: If you want to view content restricted in your region without heavy setup, the Edge extension is a quick option.
- Public Wi-Fi safety: Using the Edge extension on public Wi-Fi can help mask your traffic from local network observers, but remember to pair with other best practices like avoiding sensitive transactions on open networks.
- Quick privacy boost for daily browsing: A simple extension can give you an extra layer of privacy for routine browsing tasks without installing a full VPN client.
Best practices for using Touch VPN with Edge
- Use a reputable extension version: Always install the latest version from the Edge Add-ons store to ensure you have the latest security patches.
- Limit the extension’s permissions: Only grant what’s necessary for operation, and regularly review permissions.
- Pair with strong device security: Use a strong device password, enable biometric unlock if possible, and keep your OS updated.
- Be mindful of data limits on free plans: If you hit bandwidth caps or slowdowns, consider upgrading or trying a different service if you’re doing intensive tasks.
- Test after updates: After Edge or extension updates, test a few sites to confirm the VPN is functioning as expected.

Touch VPN encrypts the traffic that goes through the extension while you’re connected, and your IP address should appear as the server location you selected. However, browser extensions may not protect non-browser traffic. For full-device protection, pair with a desktop VPN client.
# Can I use Touch VPN with Edge on mobile devices?
Touch VPN extensions exist for desktop browsers. For mobile, you’d typically use the Touch VPN mobile app or another mobile VPN app that provides system-wide protection.
# Does Touch VPN keep logs?
This depends on the provider’s policy. Free VPN services sometimes log data for operational reasons. Always review the privacy policy and consider a paid plan if you want stricter privacy guarantees.

Some servers may allow streaming, but many streaming services actively block known VPN IPs. If streaming is your goal, look for servers labeled for streaming or test a few options to find one that works.
# Is there a kill switch in the Touch VPN Edge extension?
Not all extensions include a kill switch. If you’re concerned about leaks, use a full VPN client with a built-in kill switch or enable any available kill switch feature in the extension.
# How do I troubleshoot if Touch VPN isn’t connecting?
First, ensure the extension is enabled and updated. Try a different server, restart Edge, or temporarily disable other extensions that could clash. If the issue persists, reinstall the extension.
# Can I use Touch VPN across multiple browsers on the same device?
Some providers allow cross-browser usage if you’re using a single account. Check the extension’s policy or consider a full VPN app for multi-browser protection.
# Are there legal considerations when using a VPN with Edge?
In most places, using a VPN is legal for personal privacy and security. Some regions regulate VPN use or block certain VPNs. Always know local laws and comply with them.
# Should I switch to a different VPN if I need enterprise-grade security?
